A stone circle in northeast Scotland that archaeologists thought was built thousands of years ago has turned out to be just a few decades old. Earlier this month, archaeologists from Aberdeenshire Council and the Historic Environment Scotland agency announced that the circle of stones in a remote farm field near Alford, west of Aberdeen, was an ancient example of its kind, between 3, and 4, years old, Live Science reported on Jan.
More than 90 stone circles with a large “recumbent” stone lying on its side and dating to that period have been found in the northeast of Scotland — but almost nowhere else in the British Isles. Although the stone circle was thought to be unknown to science, some local people had remembered seeing large stones in that area, which is far away from the main roads. But on Monday Jan. Aberdeenshire Council also put out a news release on Monday , describing the latest findings about the stone circle.

It was a matter of new resources, among them pottery, polished stone tools and domesticated plans and animals. How this new technology reached and spread through the Britain and Ireland remains the subject of much debate, as does why the Mesolithic hunter-gatherers abandoned their transient, mobile way of life in favour of the sedentary one required for farming.
However it arrived, the spread of agriculture was not instantaneous. First reaching Britain in the centuries around BC, it took centuries for farming and its trappings to disseminate to all corners of the isles. Sigurd Towrie. Until recently, the earliest evidence of Neolithic activity in Orkney came from the island of Papa Westray.
There, a stone-built Neolithic house — the Knap of Howar — was dated to around BC, some four centuries after farming arrived in south-east England. This early date earned the Knap of Howar the distinction of being the oldest standing building in northern Europe. However, recent excavation on the Mainland has now pushed the arrival of farming in Orkney back a century to BC.
So, some years after the Neolithic first reached Britain, groups of farmers had started making their way north, by boat, into Orkney.

British Broadcasting Corporation Home. Many seem to have been used infrequently and may have been seasonal meeting places and food stores rather than permanently inhabited settlements. Iron objects dating from the sixth or even seventh century BC are known from England, Scotland and Wales, but the widespread adoption of iron only became common during the fourth century BC. The skill of Iron Age blacksmiths is demonstrated by the range of tools and weapons recovered from the excavation of sites such as Danebury in Hampshire and Llyn Cerig Bach on Anglesey, North Wales.
These include saws, chisels and other carpentry tools very similar in form to modern ones. Throughout the Iron Age there is evidence for extensive networks of fields associated with small farming settlements.

Agriculture in prehistoric Scotland includes all forms of farm production in the modern boundaries of Scotland before the beginning of the early historic era. Scotland has between a fifth and a sixth of the arable or good pastoral land of England and Wales, mostly in the south and east. Heavy rainfall encouraged the spread of acidic blanket peat bog , which with wind and salt spray, made most of the western islands treeless.
Hills, mountains, quicksands and marshes made internal communication and agriculture difficult. In the Neolithic period, from around 6, years ago, there is evidence of permanent settlements and farming. The two main sources of food were grain and cow’s milk. In the early Bronze Age , arable land spread at the expense of forest, but towards the end of the period there is evidence of the abandonment of farming in the uplands and deterioration of soils.
From the Iron Age , hill forts in southern Scotland are associated with cultivation ridges and terraces.
